Essay scoring criteria

These are the descriptions of scoring criteria that the trained readers will follow to determine the score (16) for your essay. Papers at each level exhibit all or most of the characteristics described at each score point. To score the new SAT Essay, scorers will use this rubric, which describes characteristics shared by essays earning the same score point in each category. Automated essay scoring (AES) is the use of specialized computer programs to assign grades to essays written in an educational setting.

Criteria for success. Any method of assessment must be judged on validity, fairness, and reliability. The essay is scored by readers who score the essay in terms of exactly what the SAT is looking for.

So what are the criteria that readers so rigidly follow? A rubric is a scoring guide used to assess performance against a set of criteria. At a minimum, it is a list of the components you are looking for when you evaluate an assignment.
